Black Cat Saunters Into the Tenderloin With Supper Club-Style Cocktails and Jazz

It's got jazz, cocktails, and a menu of supper club delights

Black Cat, which opened last Thursday July 28 in the Tenderloin, is bringing the neighborhood back to a decidedly gentler era with a swanky, supper club-style restaurant and lounge. The restaurant, from partner Fritz Quattlebaum (NYC's Casa Nela) and operations partner Khalid Mushasha (Lolinda), is right in the heart of the neighborhood, which has lately seen an influx of destination-worthy spots like Liholiho Yacht Club, Huxley, and fellow Jazz lounge Mr. Tipple's Recording Studio.
The space is two-levels, combining former Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, with high ceilings, exposed brick, and lots of dark corners and hidden nooks (as a supper club should). It was designed by Craige Walters (Blackbird, Hecho), who draped the entire place in antique velvet, leather and gold. Upstairs features a long bar with windows overlooking the street, while the basement bar is filled with cabaret tables, banquettes, and a small stage that will host live jazz and cabaret revues.
Chef Ryan Cantwell, an alum of both Zuni and Chez Panisse, is heading up the kitchen with a menu of "modern American supper club cuisine." That translates to a large selection of small plates to enjoy with classic cocktails, alongside larger dishes like chicken al mattone and a brisket patty melt. (Check it out in full below.) Drinks from bar manager Gabriel Lowe skew classic, like Manhattans, swizzles, and sidecars; wine director Eugenio Jardim has curated a 90-bottle list of artisanal wines and grower Champagnes.
The restaurant will open for dinner nightly until 1:00 a.m., with a limited bar menu until 1:30 a.m., and cocktails til 2 a.m.; brunch will launch in the near future.
