Nancy Pelosi, Bill Gates headline commencement speakers in Bay Area universities

Across the bay at Stanford University, Bill and Melinda Gates will share the podium for the commencement ceremony on June 15. Since founding the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, the Gates family has been one of the most active philanthropists in the world.

With the hustle and bustle of seniors buying their caps and gowns across the Bay Area, graduation season is officially upon us. Bay Area universities in past weeks have been busy booking commencement speakers, asking local celebrities and intellectuals to deliver the speech essential to all graduation ceremonies.
As expected, UC Berkeley and Stanford, the two premier universities in the region, got the biggest names this year. UC Berkeley turned toward House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to speak at its general commencement. Stanford looked toward the tech elite, tapping Bill and Melinda Gates to speak at its commencement ceremony.
For Stanford's Baccalaureate ceremony on June 14, a graduation rite acknowledging the spiritual contribution to education, Zen Buddhist priest Norman Fischer will be the speaker. The Bay Area-based priest founded the Everyday Zen Foundation to spread traditional zen practices around the world.
Other colleges around the Bay Area have lined up a diverse array of speakers, ranging from seasoned politicians to esteemed scientists to famous sports stars. To figure out who will be speaking at what university, scroll through the gallery above!

Dr. Abraham Verghese, Stanford Medical School professor and bestselling author, will speak at his own school's commencement ceremony on June 15.

For those who graduated from college, who spoke at your commencement ceremony? Was it an inspiring, memorable speech or was it a doldrum snoozefest?
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will be speaking at UC Berkeley's general commencement ceremony on May 17, campus officials announced on April 16. Representing San Francisco since 1987, Pelosi was the first female Speaker of the House in US history.
