The Hottest Restaurants in San Francisco Right Now, July 2015

More often than not, tipsters, readers, friends and family of Eater have one question: Where should I eat right now? Restaurant obsessives want to know what's new, what's hot, which favorite chef just launched a sophomore effort, where to sip the cocktail of the moment. And while the Eater 38 is a crucial resource covering old standbys and neighborhood essentials across the city, it is not a chronicle of the 'it' places of the moment. Thus, we offer the Eater Heatmap, which will change continually to highlight where the foodie crowds are flocking at the moment.
Check out the map of the Bay Area's hottest restaurants right now below (in no particular order beyond alphabetical), and drop any feedback in the comments section.

The Ne Timeas Restaurant Group (Flour + Water, Central Kitchen) have launched their first of two projects in the Cafe du Nord and Swedish-American Hall, a petite Basque-inspired restaurant from Central Kitchen's former chef, Ryan Pollnow. 4 Aster

Brett Cooper, who made a name for himself at Outerlands, is now helming this intimate restaurant in a quiet corner of the Mission. The food is classically NorCal and produce-centric, with many ingredients grown exclusively for the restaurant on small farms. And with Daniel Patterson's DPG as the logistical backer, wine and decor are both on point.

Cantu's extremely petite, extremely personal Mission tasting-menu restaurant offers fine dining through a Mexican lens, taking on everything from barbacoa to Mexican wedding cookies with a personal touch to be expected from a Sons & Daughters and Uchi alum. It's also relatively affordable ($57 for seven courses), and they've got a French Laundry veteran on wine. [Update: The price of dinner at Californios has been bumped to $75.]

7 Dragon Beaux

The lines are already out of control at this dim sum by day, hot pot by night spot, but with the Koi Palace family behind the scenes, that's to be expected. The menu is, as usual, vast, but early dim sum standouts appear to be the squid ink dumplings, XLB, and char siu (in regular and bao form).

Oakland, CA 94611

11 Liholiho Yacht Club

One of the most anticipated restaurants of this and many other years, LYC brings together the service and style ethos of the gang behind Nopa and Nopalito with the dynamic Hawaiian-Indian-NorCal cooking of former Prospect chef Ravi Kapur. The result is a sleek, sophisticated, and slightly cheeky tribute to the islands, complete with cocktails.

12 Lord Stanley

Chef-couple Rupert and Carrie Blease have translated their fine-dining backgrounds into a refined, but casual restaurant on Polk Street. Expect beautiful plates of food like pickled shellfish with lemon and dill, and English peas with fresh curds, carrot and dill.

18 The Progress

Scoring a reservation at the new restaurant from State Bird Provisions' Stuart Brioza & Nicole Krasinski isn't easy, but you'll be rewarded with divine, globe-trotting dishes that truly push boundaries. The menu is $65/person for six dishes (you choose from a list of 12) served family-style, so go with people who don't mind sharing. Also of note: a first-come, first-served 20-seat bar with cocktails and $5-10 bar bites, and a much more extensive wine list than State Bird's.

19 Tony Gemignani's Slice House

The pizza maestro behind Tony's Pizza Napoletana has opened his second sit-down restaurant in SF, adjacent to AT&T Park (where he has two slice counters). Classic New York, Sicilian, and grandma pies are offered whole or by the slice, along with grinders, pastas, and even gluten-free pizza. Bonus: the ballpark allows outside food, so you can carry in.

  1. There were two food stations at party halls in Boston MA; sliced roast chicken and a beef brisket with mashed sweet potato served in a cast iron casserole! The beef was really tasty and tender.
