The 12 Best Holiday Window Displays Around The World

Yes, Christmas shopping can be a nightmare (the crowds! the gift-anxiety!), but these eye-popping window displays will wow even the scroogiest of Scrooges. From NY to Paris, the holiday windows that captured our imagination this holiday season.

1

Lord & Taylor, New York

With its dancing raccoons, ice-skating bunnies and sleeping foxes, this year’s Lord & Taylor window display is clearly catered towards kids. But that didn’t stop us from stopping to ogle the whimsical, enchanted forest-themed windows, which feature 34 hand-sculptured animals, over 9,000 feet of garland, foliage, and twinkling lights.

This luxury retailer's window display depict creations interpretations of “Love, Peace and Joy,” by such acclaimed artists as Nick Cave, Rob Pruitt, and Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park.

Bloomingdale's, New York

It’s all about the lights at Bloomingdale's 2016 holiday windows. Visual artists including Inma Barrero, Erika deVries and Jonah Meyer were commissioned to create one-of-a-kind chandeliers that are being auctioned off, through December 20, with profits benefiting the Child Mind Institute.

4

Bergdorf Goodman, New York

Bergdorf Goodman wowed us last year with its head-turning Swarovski-covered crystal window displays. We were left similarly stunned after taking in this year’s dreamlike dioramas of dense green jungles, deep-blue lagoons and magical greenhouses. It’s so mesmerizing, you’ll want to climb right in to the displays.

Tiffany & Co., New York

You'll never desire a little blue box more than you will after taking in the jeweler's 5th Ave windows. The Tiffany-blue display, called “Make the World Sparkle,” depicts various Manhattan landmarks (think: Hudson River and Rockefeller Center) adorned with glittering jewels, china and other sparkling merchandise.
6

Saks Fifth Avenue, New York

You’ll get a sugar high just staring at Saks Fifth Avenue window display — all whipped cotton candy, giant swirl lollipops, and mounds of rock candy. As such, we’d recommend not seeing it on an empty stomach.
7

Macy's, New York

If Santa, reindeer, and snowflakes is what you seek, make a beeline to Macy’s in New York’s Herald Square. Each of the store’s six window displays evoke the spirit and magic of season through designer Roya Sullivan's portrayals of the North Pole.

Galeries Lafayette, Paris

French department store Galeries Lafayette is capitalizing on all the holiday foot traffic to bring awareness to global warming. The retailer’s “Amazing Arctic Christmas” tells the tale of a family of polar bears who must journey from the North Pole in search of a new home due to melting ice caps. In addition to shedding light on an important cause, the brilliant all-white display serves up a fair bit of eye candy, as well.

Printemps, Paris

Puppeteer Jean-Claude Dehix is behind the lifelike, hand-crafted characters in Printemps’ 2016 window display, which tells the story of two fictional children, Jules and Violette, as they adventure through the store on Christmas eve. Our favorite scene (pictured) depicts the children dancing on the clouds above the city rooftops.

Macy's, San Francisco

There’s a reason we put another Macy’s on this list. Every year, the SF outpost partners with the San Francisco Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to fill its window dioramas with adoptable cats and dogs. The program has found loving homes for 2,500 furbabies and raised more than $500,000 in just over ten years. No doubt, it's the most adorable display you'll ever see.

Fortnum & Mason, London

In an explicit acknowledgment of this year's Brexit vote, the theme for this Piccadilly retailer’s Christmas campaign is “Together We’re Merrier.” Each window tells the tale of an unlikely pairing—from a bull and china to a lobster and a chef— to emphasize the importance of togetherness and cordiality.
12

Selfridges, London

There’s something for everyone at this London retailer’s window display. We’re talking mannequins draped in the season’s most sought-after collections, 90 glittering disco balls (plus, a different party soundtrack for each window), and scenes of Santa in various mischievous scenarios, from playing bartender to DJ’ing a party.

Real Estate Roundup: Bay Area Homes Are Selling Faster Than Anywhere Else

Here’s a look at recent news of interest to homebuyers, home sellers, and the home-curious.pending2_sm
SAN FRANCISCO, SAN JOSE ARE THE NATION’S QUICKEST-PACED HOUSING MARKETS
The Bay Area’s well-documented inventory crunch is ensuring that serious homebuyers waste little time making deals this fall, with the San Francisco and San Jose metro area housing markets moving at the fastest pace in the nation.
That’s according to inventory data from the National Association of Realtors, which says that U.S. homes sold in an average of 79 days in October. At the end of the month, there were 2.02 million existing homes for sale, down 4.3 percent on an annual basis.
Bay Area homes are selling more than twice as fast as they do nationwide — 35 days in San Francisco and 37 days in San Jose. And in certain local submarkets, the pace of sales is even quicker. MLS data from Pacific Union’s October Real Estate Report shows that single-family homes in our East Bay region sold in an average of 17 days.

BAY AREA HOME SALES DOWN BY DOUBLE-DIGIT PERCENTAGE POINTS IN 2016
Home sales have decreased across the Bay Area so far this year, particularly at the lowest end of the market, and more cooling appears to be in store for next year.
Citing data from PropertyRadar, The Mercury News reports that home sales across the region dropped by 10.3 percent from January to September of this year. San Francisco saw the largest declines, at 13 percent, while sales sunk by 11.3 percent in Alameda County and 10.1 percent in Santa Clara County.
Along with constrained inventory, fewer distressed properties on the market are contributing to cooling sales. Distressed sales in the Bay Area dropped by 35.7 percent in the first nine months of the year. The shortage of distressed properties, which typically fall below the $500,000 price point, is further eroding affordability across the region, which could translate to another year of sluggish sales in 2017.

ONE-THIRD OF HOME SHOPPERS SEEK FORMAL OFFICE SPACES
Here’s another factor to consider when staging a property: A home-office space will appeal to a significant portion of potential buyers and likely increase its price.
A recent report from John Burns Real Estate Consulting documents the rise of telecommuting and how it affects demand for home offices. The company says that 39 percent of new home shoppers work from their houses at least one day per week and that almost one-quarter of Gen Xers work out of their homes at least three days per week.
JBREC’s survey found that one-third of buyers want a formal home office, with younger buyers more likely to prefer this amenity. As many homebuyers born in the 1970s and 1980s have young families, a space with a door helps them better concentrate and participate in conference calls. The majority of respondents to the poll indicated they would pay a premium for a home with a dedicated work space.

FEWER AMERICANS MOVING THAN EVER BEFORE
The number of Americans who moved their residence has dropped to an all-time low this year, although quite a few Californians packed their bags for the Lone Star State.
RIS Media reports that just 11.2 percent of the population moved domestically this year, even with a solid housing market and economy. Consistent with other reports, the Golden State’s expensive real estate market and high cost of living are pushing some residents to cheaper places; this year, more than 65,000 Californians moved to Texas.
Other residents appear to be fleeing high-cost urban counties for the suburbs, particularly in Southern California. In 2016, almost 40,000 people have left Los Angeles County and migrated to neighboring Orange and San Bernardino counties.

It's Always Surfing Time Somewhere

10 Destinations to Ride High All Year Long, from Bali to California

Like surfing icon Frosty Hesson once said, "If you're having a bad day, catch a wave." So what makes for an unmatched surfing spot? Depends on who you ask — the wild riders will point you to the more powerful, high-performance spots, while other surfers want a less intense, more casual experience. There's a dream patch of ocean for everybody, and we've compiled 10 of them across the globe. Winter who?

Bali, Indonesia

Photo by Domy Kamsyah via Flickr

The southernmost point of Bali, Bukit Peninsula is surrounded by the highest-quality surf in the world. Depending on the time of the year, either side of the peninsula will have favorable conditions and amazing waves that run along coral reefs. It offers a variety of fun spots for all levels of surfers, from Dreamland and Uluwatu to Padang Padang. May through September is a great time to visit. There are plenty of accommodations for every budget, and if you get tired of surfing there's a lot to keep you busy, from a vibrant cafe and party scene to relaxing yoga classes beside the pristine waters.

Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

In this magical spot you live, eat and breathe surfing. Everybody from age 3 to 83 is out in the water. With four amazing point breaks and 70 kilometers of sandy beaches, the Gold Coast features some of Australia's most popular waves to suit all levels of experience. If you're new to the scene and want to take a surfing lesson, The Spit, at the northern end of the Gold Coast, is a good choice for your first surfing experience. Pros, at the opposite end of the Gold Coast you're likely to find a nice southeasterly swell with perfect waves.

Taghazout, Morocco

Photo by Heather Cowper via Flickr

In southwest Morocco is the relaxing fishing town of Taghazout. Here you can lounge under the shade of a palm tree, take a camel-riding exploration or hit the waves. Every year the area's long right-hand point breaks attracts surfers from around the world to this paradise. Since the 1960s European surfers have been exploring this site, and today surf camps and schools can be found next to the various breaks. A beach like Panoramas is a great option for beginners, while Anchor Point and Killer Point will surely suit more advanced risk takers.

Nosara, Costa Rica

The laid-back vibes and splendid waves of Nosara make it a favorite destination among traveling surfers and wellness lovers. Located on the west coast of the Guanacaste province, it offers waves for all levels. The beaches here are endless and the attitude is friendly, and monkeys cruise casually from tree to tree. At Playa Guiones amateur surfers will find an easy wave and several surf schools offering lessons. Experienced surfers will probably find the swell pumping at the north point of Playa Pelada.

Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

The long right-handers at Jeffreys Bay are considered to be the world's best. Made famous by the surf classic The Endless Summer, this reef break is located at the base of Cape St. Francis, 75 kilometers (47 miles) west of Port Elizabeth. Ten points, including Supertubes, Impossibles, The Point and Albatross, make up the longest right-hand point break on the planet. During the evenings, pods of dolphins join wave riders while they swim around Supertubes.

Ericeira, Portugal

If you like uncrowded beaches with consistent waves all year long, you'll fall in love with this Portuguese destination. Ericeira is a fishermen’s village north of Lisbon. In 2011 it was chosen as one of the eight World Surfing Reserves and it represents one of the most attractive places for a unique surfing experience. Among the several spots for rookie and intermediate surfers are Foz do Lizandro and Praia do Sul, which divide in two different breaks. For the wild riders there are more than 15 spots along the 8 kilometers (5 miles) of coastline, including the powerful right reef break of Coxos, one of the best waves in Europe.

North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

Also known as the surfing mecca, this 11-kilometer (7-mile) stretch of beach offers everything from beginner waves all the way to breaks such as the infamous Banzai Pipeline. Every year thousands of surfers from around the world flock to Hawaii in search of the perfect wave. From mid-November to February the big-wave surfing occurs, while May to September is optimal if you're seeking a more temperate atmosphere. The North Shore also hosts important surfing events and offers plenty of restaurants, bars, shops and attractions such as Puʻu o Mahuka Heiau and the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge.

Santa Cruz, California

Santa Cruz has ridable waves almost every day of the year. As you can learn at the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, the first waves surfed in the continental United States were ridden by three teenage Hawaiian brothers in 1885 at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz. With a great number of beaches that accommodate all levels of surfers, the city is known for its laid-back surfing community, big waves and cold water. Head to Cowell Beach or Capitola Beach for long, gentle waves. Elite surfers, the spot at 30th and East Cliff is where to go for more aggressive rides. Either way, keep your eyes wide open for the curious, wandering sharks.

North Coast, Peru

Photo by Geraint Rowland via Flickr

Pre-Incan cultures are considered to be some of the world's earliest wave riders. It's no surprise, then, that northern Peru has Earth's longest left point break, as well as a wide variety of other top-quality breaks. In this particular corner of the planet, the southern and equatorial currents meet, providing the area with consistent surf all year round. For experienced surfers, Cabo Blanco's great left-hander is a superb option, while the longest wave in the world, known for its speed and perfection, is found in Chicama. Very close to this singular wave you can find a few hotels that offer surfing tours guided by expert teams.

The Maldives, Indian Ocean

The surf region in the Maldives includes the Central, Malé Atolls, and Southern Atolls. Together they offer a mix of left and right reef breaks to satisfy surfers of every level. Every year, tour agencies bring in surfers from all over the world to experience the impressive waves, clear waters, coconut palms and blazing blue skies. Where to stay in the Maldives depends on what kind of trip you want; if surfing is all you have in mind, the best choice is a surf charter boat to sail in search of dream waves. The best time to venture to the Maldives for surfing is from March to October.

Get To Know Tequila's Even Cooler Cousin

Mix It Up With Mezcal

Tequila, we love you (okay, some of us hate you, but for that we blame college). That said, you're not the only blessing of the agave plant. Gain an appreciation for mezcal thanks to La Urbana's monthly educational and tasting series. This month the Mexican cantina is partnering with Alipús Mezcal for a class. As you chow down on shared appetizers and sip the smoky spirit, you'll learn about mezcal's history and the methods used by Oaxaca-based Alipús. The two-hour seminar will leave you wanting more — thankfully, these events happen on the third Monday of every month, so you can make it a habit to attend. It's educational, after all.
