Every year around this time, e-mails start to come in, asking for
places to take family for lunch and dinner around major shopping areas,
particularly Union Square.
So this year I decided to create my own guide. The area is not
lacking for options — just look at all the fast-serve restaurants in the
bottom of Westfield Centre. I’ve tried most of them and the one I
continually return to is the Buckhorn for a tri-tip sandwich with a
container of natural juices. Put on some horseradish and the sandwich
beats out the surrounding burger, ramen, Mexican, Korean, pasta and
soup options.
So it goes around Union Square. The accompanying slide show gives my
picks for some of the best places for every occasion, including a quick
burger bite (Super Duper), a refined white-tablecloth lunch (Campton
Place), exciting Thai food (Kin Khao) and one of the best cassoulets in
the Bay Area (Aquitaine).
