Elton John, Mumford & Sons and the Black Keys will headline this year’s Outside Lands festival — but that hardly seems to matter. Most of the tickets for the three-day concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which takes place Aug. 7 to Aug. 9, were sold out by the time the promoters announced the lineup on Tuesday morning.
John will take a break from his current four-year residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to make the date. Mumford & Sons arrive with a new, reportedly banjo-free album of material. The Black Keys, meanwhile, become the first band to make a third appearance at the festival.
Other artists high on the bill include four-time Grammy winner Sam Smith, Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar and, also making a return, Wilco. The full lineup includes more than 70 extremely diverse acts, that will jostle for attention with the abundant food trucks, wineries, breweries, standup comedians and corporate branded dance tents.
Among them are Axwell and Ingrosso, Tame Impala, D’Angelo and the Vanguard, St. Vincent, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Lake Street Dive, First Aid Kid, Cold War Kids, Hot Chip, Slightly Stoopid, G-Eazy and — who else? — Billy Idol.
