UCSF Officially Throws Its Support Behind Warriors' Arena

The latest chapter in the saga of the Warriors' arena is now unfolding, with UCSF officially supporting the plans for an arena to be built in Mission Bay—if an agreement is reached with the city on how to handle traffic on game days. The arena, which is set to be built across the street from the UCSF Medical Center, has generally found public support but has been the target of opposition from the Mission Bay Alliance, a privately funded nonprofit that cites traffic and parking issues with the Mission Bay plans. Now, UCSF has thrown its support behind the arena after six months of talks with the Warriors and city officials over parking and traffic. The only problem that hasn't been fully worked out is traffic on dual game days when both the San Francisco Giants and the Warriors play in the same part of the city.

A plan has already been hashed out to handle traffic on Warriors'-only game days through increased public transit and "traffic separation" that would push cars headed for the arena onto certain streets, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Negotiations for a traffic "trigger" mechanism that would be used on dual game days are ongoing and expected to take another month or two. UCSF has launched an official campaign for the plans called "WinWinSF" that is aimed to build public support and includes a petition in support of the arena. Despite UCSF's official support, the Mission Bay Alliance continues to fight the arena.
